The best way to get to know a foreign country is to visit it, or still better to live there for a couple of years.
So did Jan van der Putten, the author of this book, who still lives during a part of the year in China and travels a lot through the country.

In this book he tells the fictitious story of an adolescent boy named Rabban who is visiting China because he wants to get to know his roots, being adopted as a baby by a Western couple.
Not yet old enough to travel alone his parents arrange a Chinese companion: Mister Kong and his grandson Yang, who is of his age. They, both in different ways, introduce him to the peculiarities of Chinese daily life and visit famous tourist sites. Wandering Beijing, Xian, and other places Rabban is sometimes taken aback by the differences between China and his home country. His companions try to answer all his questions. They talk about Chinese history and the politics nowadays, the Chinese behaviour, sport, art and shopping. By train they travel with him through China’s different landscapes. During his visit he not only discovers China but also the truth about his past.

Young readers - as well as the adult ones - discover through the eyes of Rabban China and his inhabitants.
This attractive book, full of stories and with beautiful art and photo material, helps the readers to open their mind to China and their Chinese contemporaries.

Jan van der Putten worked until recently as a journalist in China. He wrote several books about the country and its people. Now he is director of Eyes on China. Visit www.janvanderputten.com.
